Whether you’re after a £5 sourdough loaf or an early-morning sandwich, Lewisham’s independent bakeries offer plenty of reasons to stop by. Better still, these five favourites are all close to Square Roots Lewisham. Here’s what to order and when to go.
Ed Baker
Tucked away in Hither Green on Campshill Road, Ed Baker is easy to miss but hard to forget once you’ve found it. Owner Ed Sleiman bakes everything on-site daily using traditional methods, and the sourdough, priced from £5 a loaf, is the reason people cross the borough for it. The pastel de nata and challah are both worth a detour too.
It won the Mayor of Lewisham’s Best New Business Award in 2022, and the hours reflect a small, hands-on operation: Fridays and Saturdays 8 am-5 pm.
Doorstep Bakery
Right by Brockley station, Doorstep Bakery has the feel of a proper old-school sandwich shop, with generously filled rolls and homemade cakes that regulars come for. The chicken, bacon and avocado sandwich is the one to order, ideally with a slice of cake to follow.
It’s open Monday to Friday from 6.30 am, Saturday from 7 am, and closed Sundays.
Le Délice
Le Délice has become Ladywell’s go-to French patisserie, with a second branch in Hither Green. Whether you’re staying for breakfast or picking up a pastry, there’s plenty to choose from. The macarons are a highlight if you fancy something sweet, and prices range from £5 to £ 15.
It’s open from 6 am to 7 pm on weekdays, 6 am to 6 pm at the weekend, seven days a week.
Klos Deli
On Lewis Grove, a few minutes from Lewisham station, Klos Deli is a Polish and European delicatessen. The fresh bread, baked goods and dessert counter make it well worth a visit.
It’s open daily, 8 am to 9 pm Monday to Saturday and 10 am to 5 pm on Sunday, making it a reliable weekend option.
Cake Box
Cake Box specialises in made-to-order celebration cakes, including egg-free options. It’s less of a drop-in bakery and more of a destination for birthdays and occasions, so a personalised cake ordered ahead is the move.
It’s open every day of the week: 11 am to 7 pm Monday to Wednesday, 11 am to 8 pm Thursday to Saturday, and 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday.
