The Chelsea Pensioners backed a fundraising initiative by a team from affordable housing provider Square Roots who tackled the Thames Bridges Trek Challenge, a 25km walk over 16 historic bridges, from Putney Bridge to Tower Bridge.
A group of Pensioners met the Square Roots team on Chelsea Embankment, opposite the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the Chelsea Pensioners. Square Roots is raising funds for the Chelsea Pensioners Veterans Outreach Programme, helping to reduce social isolation and the issue of homelessness among veterans in London. Barbara Richardson, MD, Square Roots, said:“Meeting the Chelsea Pensioners and hearing about the work done with veterans gave us all great inspiration for the Trek. We had a team of 15 walkers and they all managed to complete the route, battling driving rain and then bright sunshine to enjoy a stunning view of the Thames from every bridge. The work the Royal Hospital Chelsea does with veterans is so important, particularly around social isolation. It is a cause close to my heart, as a former Army reservist and with a family tradition of military service. We are hoping to raise £20,000 for the outreach programme.”
The trek is a continuation of the support being provided for the Royal Hospital Chelsea charity by London Square, inaugural corporate partner of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Square Roots is the award-winning affordable provider of homes for shared ownership, affordable and social rent across Greater London, established by London Square in 2021. Square Roots is an independent Registered Social Provider and has a separate board and governance.
